Basically it all boils down to 2 things:
1. You need to understand the question before answering it. In other words, know what they want & give them what they want. Research as much about the school that you're applying to find out what they need, visit the school, take a tour & see what students r doing. Some schools requires that u take their drawing exam to measure ur potential.
2. Prepare ur portfolio. Find out how much this weights in getting u into the school. Show them what u know & what you're capable of. Things like hand sketching, photography, use of color, written materials like poems describing architecture, 3d rendering, perspectives, etc. Your portoflio is a history of ur work. Do not worry too much about these things. You can even show them pictures of building u took on trips & write something about it. Mainly the school wants to understand the history of ur work & what u know. The school might see potentials in u that u do not see yet. (No two persons sees the same thing the same)
Hi, Well, the answer is ''yes'' & ''no''. This is were YOU must do some research on ur own to figure out that question. Every university has websites with to common
question such as ur or u can call them directly. Most universities have 1-800 numbers so u will not be charged long distance. I am familiar with the University of New Mexico, for undergraduate admission u must follow these requirements At UNM students apply to the architecture program after completing 26 credits.
1. An application form.
2. A portfolio of creative work. (Portfolio Guidelines r available in the above office - format is 81/2x11 inches).
3. A letter of intent (one page).
4. Transcripts. (All students must submit unofficial UNM transcripts with their application.
Having seen these Portfolio is first hand I can tell u that most universities r looking for a creative side of the applicant. Such as sketches, photographs, rendering & completed school project as outline by the Portfolio guidelines.
It all comes down to YOU, do u enjoy sketching, watercolor or cool computer renderings, its what ever u do best! In school architecture comes down to trying to convince someone (a professor) to select ur building as the one they want to see get built!
You have to show them an understanding of the historical content of the neighborhood or city.
Also, to a lesser degree u might want to convince the professor u understand the structure of the building (not much just enough to sound credible).
And finally, after months of developing the project its got to look great, but it should not just look great, it must have meaning.
Ok, I am leaving u with a couple of links to help u with ur selection. Check out naab.org/cal_cat1724/cal_cat.htm to help getting in contact with schools u r looking to apply to. And archinect.com is a great website with tons of info about schools, architects & design. Archinect has a great school blog where u can follow other students daily life at their school & see some project.
Good luck!!!
it is always a good idea to have a portfolio to show. you need to put everything that you have done that you are proud of pertaining to what you are wanting to do. it shows that you are responsible, you can achive goals, you know what you are doing and it shows that you are proud and happy to be doing what you are doing. it will also let the people you are showing it to have confidince in you and it will give you something to talk about and refer to if need be.
